WORKSHOP ON “PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION (PDP) ACT 2010 “Legal Compliance” FOR HEALTHCARE SECTOR:“MANAGING HEALTHCARE DATA, ENSURING COMPLIANCE”

The Personal Data Protection Act, aimed at preventing the abuse of citizens’ personal data for commercial purposes, will come into force on Jan 1 2013.More personally identifiable information PII) is being captured around healthcare processes in the form of patients’ medical records, medical imaging databases, disease registries, health insurance claims, clinical trials, medicinal purchases and consumption’s doctor-patient communications records, and so on. As a result, managing personal data has now become a critical business process of healthcare industry both internally and externally.
With the enactment of Personal Data Protection (PDP) Act 2010 (Act 709), business landscape for healthcare sector has tremendously changed. The Act tasks the commercial healthcare sector with series of obligations in dealing with personal data in their control: including data of their patients, medical officers and employees. While measures to protect confidentiality such as those noted in forms and privacy notifications have become the norm in the industry, healthcare practitioners and service providers are still in dark about multi-dimensional effect of the PDP Act in relation to the whole processes.
This one-day workshop will cover and receive the answers to all those questions and more. Attendees will discuss the major components of Personal Data Protection Act: PDP principles and their implementation, duties of medical officers in data processing and rights of data subjects patients, employees, doctors) concerning their own personal data. You will be given practical steps in preparing yourself to comply with this new legislation. Guidelines relating to required privacy policies in relation to HR and patients records will be discussed. Samples from real incidents, court cases as well as real forms will be learned. Participants will leave this workshop armed with relevant information needed to prepare for PDP Act compliance.
Dr Sonny Zulhuda holds a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in information security law and data protection from the International Islamic University Malaysia where he is currently attached to as an Assistant professor in the Civil Law Department. He has over 10-year experience in the professional training and consultancy on cyberlaw, data protection and IT governance. He conducted PDP law training to managers and executives in various sectors including government agencies, airline carrier, telecommunication, banking, insurance, media, energy & mining, legal and accounting professions as well as universities. He helped the Governments
of Malaysia and Indonesia in drafting laws and policies on cyber security, wireless security, content regulation, Internet best-practices and personal data protection. Dr. Sonny is a web-science SDP scholar from the University of Oxford, UK, and a Fellow of the Washington-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). He is a certified trainer for Internet Citizenship course endorsed by the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia.
